The Asian Regional Forum meeting is a precursor to the “Global Summit for Democracy” to be organized by the National Electoral Institute of Mexico

Five regional forums for America, Africa, Asia, Europe, North Africa and the Middle East have been created within the framework of the World Summit for Democracy

The Electoral Commission of India will organize a virtual “Asian Regional Forum” meeting on “Making our Elections Inclusive, Accessible and Participatory” at Nirvachan Sadan on August 11, 2022. This Regional Forum meeting is a precursor to the “Global Summit for Democracy” which will be organized by the National Electoral Institute of Mexico in the coming month. The meeting of the World Summit and Regional Forum aims to generate synergy between international organizations and electoral bodies around the world and to promote intellectual and institutional mobilization to strengthen electoral democracy in the world.

India’s Chief Election Commissioner, Shri Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioner, Shri Anup Chandra Pandey will chair the Asian Regional Forum meeting. The meeting will see the participation of election management bodies from Mexico, Mauritius, Philippines, Nepal, Uzbekistan, Maldives and representatives from International IDEA, Association of World Electoral Bodies (A-WEB ) and the International Foundation for Election Systems (IFES).

This Asian Regional Forum (ARF) meeting has two sessions. The first session is the ‘Inclusive Elections: Improving Youth, Gender and Citizen Participation in Remote Areas”, which will be co-chaired by the Chief Electoral Commissioner of Mauritius and Nepal. The session will bring together representatives of COMELEC Philippines and representatives of International IDEA and A-WEB.

The second session on ‘Accessible Elections: Enhancing Participation of Persons with Disabilities & Senior Citizens’ will be chaired by the Commissioner, COMELEC, Philippines, and the CEC of Uzbekistan and will be represented by the Election Commission of Nepal and Maldives and IFES (Asia-Pacific).

Within the framework of this “World Summit for Democracy”, five Regional Forums namely Africa, America, Asia, Europe and the countries of the Arab States have been created. India is hosting the Asian Regional EMB Forum meeting not only to institutionalize and mobilize EMBs as a precursor to the “Global Summit for Democracy”, but also to reflect on evolving geopolitics, emerging technologies and their use in the management of elections in view of the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The outcomes of the Regional Forum meetings aim to generate an action plan and agenda for strengthening democracy around the world, particularly through strong electoral processes. So far, three meetings of the Regional Forum for Europe, America and Africa have taken place during the months of June and July 2022.
